Custom Work 2007

The Mole

I built a 16ft Thames River Skiff late in 2007 and she was delivered early in 2008. Based on the river boats of the mid-19th century they are elegant small craft. It is lapstrake construction and the designer is Iain Oughtred. To see the designers description of the boat and initial plans Click here.

See below my progress.

With the strongback faired the garboard is fine tuned ready for fastening.

Here the bevelled garboard

The plank is fastened with a handy plywood clamping device. Stainless steel screws are used in the stem and transom.

The 5th plank is fastened.

The final plank. She will now be ready to take off the molds.

She is off the molds and ready for the detailed work to begin. This will be the rails, the breasthook, the sanding, the shaping, the seats etc. This is enjoyable and time consuming work.

The boat is almost ready for a final sand before paint. These pictures show the details, including the seating, backrest, foot brace and the floorboards are in place.

The Thames River Skiff all finished and lastly in its cover. She has been safely delivered to her owner ready for the summer.

Repair Work

16ft Dippy

I recently gave a little TLC to a 16ft Dippy called "Putter". A wonderful little boat, she was a joy to have in my workshop.  I would like to share a photo of this great boat which was orginally restored by Joe Fossey in 1991.

20ft Caledonian Yawl/Steamboat

Please find below pictures of this project.

In the spring I built a Caledonian Yawl. The 20ft Caledonian Yawl is an Iain Oughtred design.

This boat has now been delivered to her new owner who will be installing a wood fired steam engine.  I am looking forward to seeing this boat on Lake Rosseau in the very near future.
